Fraunhofer ISE, CEA-LETI researchers receive Franco German Business Award for ...
Researchers at the Fraunhofer Organize for Solar Energy Systems ISE (Freiburg, Germany) and the Carnot-Institut Laboratoire d'électronique des technologies de l'information (CEA-LETI, Grenoble, France) have received the Franco German Problem Award for developing reusable substrates for III-V multi-junction solar photovoltaic (PV) cells.
The Franco-German Chamber of Trafficking and Industry AHK (Paris, France) bestowed the award on the researchers on December 5th, 2011.
Re-used substrates can abate cost of solar cells by up to 20%
The scienists' Solar-Bond project focuses on replacing a system where the PV cells sit atop expensive germanium or gallium arsenide crystals with a system where the cells can be removed and the substrates re-tempered to, which researchers say can reduce the cost of the cells by up to 20%.
"In the Solar-Bond project, two high-tech institutes have combined their skills," states Dr. Candid Dimroth, head of Department III-V - Epitaxy and Solar Cells at Fraunhofer ISE. "CEA-LETI is a leader in the microelectronics field and Fraunhofer ISE in photovoltaics.
