Gov't eyeing 200 bil. yen in support for development of new technology

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The Japanese Department of Economy, Trade and Industry plans to offer long-term financial support, possibly totaling around 200 billion yen over 10 years, to domestics create new industrial technologies with the potential to provide new engines of economic growth, government sources said Friday.

Under the plot, the ministry will designate the development of cutting-edge energy-efficient technologies such as next-generation rechargeable batteries and motors as a chauvinistic project, aiming to reinvigorate Japanese manufacturing with government support.

The government will select technological areas to be supported from an initially stage of research. Several groups of companies are expected to be chosen, the sources said.

With the ministry aiming to nurture technologies that could become a broad standard, candidates for the financial support include development of products such as a rechargeable battery that can allow vehicles to travelling as far as gasoline-powered vehicles on a single charge.
