Of the SolarWorld-led Coalition for American Solar Manufacturing’s efforts to have Chinese administration/PV companies sanctioned for dumping and illegal subsidies—and the Coalition for Affordable Solar Energy’s vociferous marker-campaign—is the looming temporary shutdown of the CASM point company’s main US root in Hillsboro, OR.Tucked in toward the end of his sometimes-overheated statement during testimony to the International Trade Commission earlier this month, SolarWorld Industries America honcho Gordon Brinser said the following:
“Anon after we completed the ramp-up of our state-of-the-art facility in Hillsboro, the Chinese surge gained momentum, forcing us to start curtailing production as we lost an increasing number of sales to Chinese imports. Despite the fact that we extracted every bit of proficiency in our production process and made substantial R&D investments, we simply could not reduce prices enough to keep pace with the dumped and illegally subsidized Chinese prices. Chinese prices have declined between 40 and 50%. Without stupendous intervention by the Chinese Government, this type of collapse in market pricing does not reflect a sustainable, extended-term cost reduction.
