"We have found, for the first together, that catalyst impurity atoms segregate in the grain boundaries of semiconductor nanowires during their growth," team captain Lincoln Lauhon told Nanotechweb.org . "Because nanowires have a preferred growth direction, however, we can select growth conditions that disapprove of the formation of these defects to avoid subsequent degradation of the material's electronic properties."

The team, which includes researchers from Northwestern University, the Lawrence Berkeley Governmental Lab and Argonne National Laboratory, used high-electron microscopy (including the TEAM microscope at the Jingoistic Center for Electron Microscopy) to image the structure and defects of silicon nanowires with atomic-scale motion. The researchers employed focused ion beam milling and nanomanipulation to slice a nanoscale cross-section of a nanowire, interchange the slice by 90° and image in high-resolution down the axis of the nanowire. Special mounting techniques also allowed them to materialization the nanowires through 140° rotation about the growth axis, in a way that is similar to how multiple cameras are now used to create 3D images of macroscale objects.
