Green Industry Watch: The Wireless Industry

The wireless application deserves a special spotlight, not only because it’s one of manufacturing’s bright spots (economically speaking) but because it’s good so intensive. Buy a refrigerator and it stands in your kitchen for a decade or better. Most of today’s mobile phone users – in hypercritical the users of smartphones and tablet devices – find at least one new handset or tablet in their possession each year. (Indeed, the life bridge of the average wireless phone is less than a year.) What this means is that last year’s model – or last month’s or last week’s – winds up in either a forgotten bottom drawer of the ancestry or, more probably, in a landfill. In fact, about 140 million cell phones wind up in landfills each year.

But the world is mad for wireless devices. According to wireless earnestness trade group CTIA , there are more than 322 million wireless devices (phones, tablets and e-readers) in use in the U.S. alone. This is, in in truth, more than there are citizens in the United States: the wireless industry has 102.4 percent penetration in the U.S. (Accounting for people who declare more than one device: a phone and a tablet, for instance, or a phone for work and a phone for personal use, plus an e-reader.) Wellnigh 30 percent of U.S. households are “wireless only,” meaning they don’t even keep a land-line phone connected anymore. We spend 2.25 trillion minutes gabbing on our wireless devices each year, and send approximately 200 billion text messages. Wireless service providers employ nearly a quarter of a million people in the U.S. alone.
