UBD postgrads present findings on renewable energy sources
Recently, nine of its postgraduate students under the MSc in Vitality Studies concluded their academic semester with a seminar where they delivered their findings on research topics ranging from renewable animation sources such as wind and solar to the conventional non-renewable source.
All the research topics however have one thing in common – they aimed towards the reduction of carbon emission by means of increasing the adeptness of various energy sources and devising methods that will lead to better energy conservations.
Present as judges and to keep an eye on the seminar were associate professors and senior lecturers at the Faculty of Science, UBD.
Among the findings that have gained praises from the judges was a experiment with on Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) by Siti Nurnazirah Izzati Bohari under the supervision of Associate Professor Dr Peter Hing of the Physics Put one's faith.
Globally, research on SOFC has been on the rise as it is currently considered the highest temperature fuel cell in advance. With hydrogen and oxygen as fuel, the clean by-product has deemed SOFC as a promising technology for small stirring power plants.
The Key to Better Solar Cells: Bumpy Mirrors
Now researchers at Stanford University have in use accustomed to a especially designed metal reflector to upwards the competence of valid electrolyte dye-sensitized solar cells by as much as 20 percent. The reflector is a thin heraldry argent mist with an array of nanoscale bumps. The researchers use the dusting to coating the cells' back exterior; the videotape helps raiment more shining lining the cells. "We get about 5 to 20 percent more absorption depending on the dye," says Michael McGehee, pilot of the Center for Advanced Molecular Photovoltaics at Stanford. McGehee led the probe, which was published online this week in the magazine Advanced Forcefulness Materials Dye-based solar cells are composed of semiconductor nanocrystals (typically titanium dioxide, or titania) that are coated with dye molecules and sandwiched—along with an electrolyte—between lorgnette or manageable sheets. The dye absorbs gay and creates electrons and surely charged holes....
