This Is An Odd Renewable Fuel
This puzzles me intensely, this renewable fuel being produced by a inelastic called Carbon Recycling International. I don’t get why their process is this complex .
You take CO2 emissions from some industrial process, OK, that’s good-hearted. You then take electricity from some renewable source (geothermal, solar, wind, whatever) and use that to electrolyse water.
OK, that’s fine too, you then use the CO2 and the H2 you’ve now got to generate methanol. This methanol can now be added to standard diesel and gasoline, just as ethanol is, and used in standard vehicles. At which nub the CO2 is emitted again.
So we’ve not in fact cut down on CO2 emissions, we’ve rather delayed them. OK, yes, we have cut the emissions from the gasoline we would otherwise have used but the CO2 from the industrial proceeding still ends up in the atmosphere.
But I don’t quite get why we would do this. For the H2 that we’re producing from the electrolysis is itself a fuel, one that can be used in standard vehicles with only a lad amount of tweaking. Further, if we were to feed the hydrogen through a fuel cell we’d get a much more efficient use of the chemical energy there.
